What is HEIC and why do iPhones use it?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's default photo format since iOS 11. It produces smaller file sizes than JPEG while maintaining comparable quality — typically half the size at the same visual fidelity.

Will I lose quality converting to JPG?

At 90% quality, the difference is virtually imperceptible to the human eye and file sizes stay manageable. Lower quality means smaller files with more visible compression artifacts; higher quality means larger files.

My HEIC file contains multiple images (burst/Live Photo) — will all frames convert?

This tool converts the primary image in the HEIC file. Burst sequences and Live Photo video components are not currently extracted.

Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows or older software?

HEIC is a relatively new format and requires modern codecs. Windows 10/11 can open HEIC files with the optional HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store, but many older programs do not support it — which is why converting to JPG is useful.
